James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
The Dancing Girl 1889
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935

This is one of Whistler's earliest lithographs of draped female figures in motion. Lithography, like watercolour and pastel, gave Whistler the freedom to realize a range of subtle effects, which were enhanced by his use of antique Dutch and Japanese papers of varying colour and texture.
