James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
Early Morning 1878
Lithotint. Third state. Signed with a butterfly.
Presented by Dr J. A. McCallum (1862–1948)

The fluid application of the heavily diluted ink using the lithotint technique, and its often accidental effects, has created a subtle evocation of the hazy atmosphere of early morning. Whistler's house at Lindsey Row, Chelsea, overlooked Battersea Reach, the location of this view. GLAHA 49016
