James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
Little Venice 1880
Etching. Second state. Butterfly signature in plate.
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935

Whistler exploits the texture of the laid paper to convey the vast expanse of water, an effect accentuated, as in his watercolours, by the tiny but deftly executed details of the topography. The etching shows a view from the Lido, with the domes of Santa Maria della Salute and the Giudecca just visible. GLAHA 46604
