James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
Dordrecht 1882/3
Watercolour Signed with a butterfly
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935

The texture of the paper is exploited here to great effect to convey the smooth expanse of water. Its surface is punctuated by the precise brushwork of the boats, windmill and Whistler’s butterfly signature in the foreground. The watercolour was possibly painted on a visit to Dordrecht, Amsterdam and Haarlem during the winter of 1882. GLAHA 46088
