James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
T. A. Nash's Greengrocer's Shop 1887
Etching and drypoint. Fifth state. Butterfly signature in plate
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935

This is one of several Whistler etchings of shop fronts. As in his watercolours, Whistler concentrates on the display of goods and those inspecting it, here a group of children. By leaving the central space blank, Whistler focuses attention on the marks left by his needle on either side. GLAHA 46622
