James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
Violet and Silver: Low Tide, Belle-Ile-en-Mer 1899/1900
Watercolour Signed with a butterfly
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935

Whistler often used, as here, cream Japanese paper laid down on card. Paint is applied in horizontal strokes and broader washes, which define land, sea and sky. The final effect is part crisp, part blurred: note the contrast between the outline of the waves and the horizon line. GLAHA 46282
