James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
Au bord de la mer 1888
Watercolour Signed with a butterfly
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935

Whistler is highly selective here, concentrating on the pose and dress of the figures rather than the distant sea or the immediate surroundings. This watercolour was probably painted in the seaside resort of Dieppe in Normandy, where Whistler stayed with Walter and Ellen Sickert in September 1885. He used a board from Louis Cornelissen's London shop. GLAHA 46100
