James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
Gold and Brown: The Guitar Player c. 1885
Watercolour Signed with a butterfly
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935

The identity of the subject is uncertain but may be the Spanish painter and guitarist, Dario de Regoyos (1857–1913). Regoyos, like Whistler, exhibited with the Société des XX in Brussels around this time. Dramatic lighting and scumbling effects draw attention to the figure, who is set against a rich, broadly painted background. GLAHA 46096
