James McNeill Whistler
American: 1834–1903
Arrangement in black and gold 1883/5
Watercolour Signed with a butterfly
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935

The model, Milly Finch, often posed for Whistler during the mid 1880s. Here, her exaggerated stance is reinforced by Whistler's broad downward strokes of black. These contrast with the thinner washes and scumbling on the skirt. Gouache is introduced into other areas such as the face to create an opaque effect. GLAHA 46090
